Małgorzata Kiełkowska

Małgorzata Kiełkowska (born in 1942 in Zwierzyniec), mountaineer and climber,  M.Sc. in Physics (graduate of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań), PhD in chemical science, author of climbing guidebooks, translator and editor of mountain literature. She has hiked since her school years and since 1962 climbed in the Tatras in summer (new routes on the Staroleśny Szczyt) and in winter ( first winter ascent of the West pillar of Mała Pośrednia Grań) and the Caucasus (ascent of Mount Elbrus via Chotiu Tau), mountains of the Balkans, Morocco, Pyrenean Peninsula, Scandinavia and Turkey. She participated in Silesian expeditions to the Hindu Kush in 1976 (Akher Chagh 7017 m, the first female ascent of the north-west flank), the Himalayas (Silesian expedition to Lhotse in 1979) and the Andes (1981, Cordillera Huayhuash, among others, the first Polish ascent of Nevado Rasac Norte, the first female ascent of five-thousanders: Ancocancha 5622 m, Nevado Paradise Collot 5427 m). She also actively participated in the organization of other Silesian expeditions to high mountains. Together with her husband, Jan, she has drawn up a pioneering series of 11 climbing guidebooks to the rocks of Jura Krakowsko-Częstochowska (1977-1997). She is the author of translations from German of books like: The White Spider by Heinrich Harrer, 2000, 2013; My life at the Limit by Reinhold Messner, 2008; The Mountains inside me by Alexander Huber, 2012; or Matterhorn by Daniel Anker, 2017. She was the editor of numerous books about mountains, e.g. six monographic climbing guidebooks to the Himalayas and the Karakoram by Jan Kiełkowski, published in the “Mountaineering Monograph ” series. Co-author and co-editor of The Great Encyclopaedia of Mountains and Mountaineering (7 volumes) by the STAPIS Publishing House, containing a total of more than 20 000 entries- the only one collection with such volume in the world.

Together with her husband-Jan they have created a rich collection of mountain literature, comprising of more than 6000 books and journals and over 2000 thousand maps of mountain regions which were the basics for The Great Encyclopaedia of Mountains and Mountaineering. They both received the award “For spreading mountain culture” (2013), and the Wladyslaw Krygowski Literary Award for 2013.
